How We Built a Strong Fence for a Property in Invercargill

Building a fence is more than just putting up some posts and panels. It’s about creating a boundary that looks good, lasts long, and suits the land. Recently, at Digger Worx Invercargill, I worked on a fence project that did just that for a property right here in Invercargill. I want to share the steps we took, so you can see how a well-planned fence comes together and why it’s worth getting the right team on the job.
Preparing the Site and Digging Trenches
The first step was to clear the boundary line where the fence would go. This meant removing any plants, rocks, or debris that could get in the way. We also staged all the building materials nearby to keep the work smooth and efficient.
Next, we dug a continuous trench along the boundary. This trench was important because it would hold the lower retaining timber boards and the deep post footings. Digging the trench carefully ensures the fence will be stable and level, especially on uneven ground.
Setting Deep Posts for a Strong Foundation
Once the trench was ready, we moved on to digging deep post holes along the boundary. These holes needed to be deep enough to hold the timber posts firmly in place, which is key for a fence that can stand up to Southland’s weather.
We positioned each vertical timber post in its hole and used temporary timber bracing to keep it perfectly straight. Then, we poured concrete around the posts to secure them. This step makes sure the posts won’t shift or lean over time.
Installing Retaining Timber Boards
With the posts set, we fixed horizontal timber retaining boards at ground level between the posts. These boards act as a base to hold back the soil and create a level surface for the rest of the fence.
This part is important for properties with slopes or uneven ground. The retaining boards help prevent soil erosion and keep the fence looking neat and tidy.
Framing the Rails and Adding the Top Cap
Next, we installed three horizontal timber rails across the posts: one at the bottom, one in the middle, and one near the top. These rails give the fence its frame and strength.
To finish the frame, we added a top capping rail. This cap not only adds a clean, finished look but also protects the top of the fence from weather damage.

Mounting Corrugated Iron Panels for Durability and Style
For the main body of the fence, we used dark corrugated iron panels. These sheets were screwed vertically into the timber frame. Corrugated iron is a popular choice in Southland because it’s tough, weather-resistant, and low maintenance.
The dark colour gave the fence a modern, sleek look that fits well with the local style. Plus, corrugated iron panels provide excellent privacy and security.
Final Touches and Cleaning Up the Site
After the panels were up, we removed the temporary bracing from the posts. Then, we backfilled the ground around the base of the fence and levelled it off to make sure everything looked neat.
Finally, we cleared the site of any leftover debris and materials. Leaving the property clean is part of delivering a professional job.

Why Choose a Timber and Corrugated Iron Fence?
This project used a combination of timber and corrugated iron, which works well for many Invercargill properties. Timber posts and rails provide a strong, natural frame. Corrugated iron panels add durability and a modern look.
If you’re thinking about a fence, consider the benefits of this style:
Strong and long-lasting: Deep posts and concrete footings keep the fence stable.
Low maintenance: Corrugated iron doesn’t need much upkeep.
Good privacy: Solid panels block views and noise.
Customisable look: You can choose colours and timber finishes to suit your home.

FAQs
How do you prepare the site before building a fence?
The boundary is first cleared of plants, rocks, and debris. The fence line is then marked out and prepared for trenching and post holes.
Why are deep fence posts important?
Deep post footings help provide a stable foundation for the fence. This is particularly important in areas exposed to changing weather and uneven ground conditions.
Why were concrete footings used for the fence posts?
Concrete was used around the timber posts to help secure them firmly in place and reduce the risk of the posts shifting or leaning.
Why use corrugated iron for a fence in Invercargill?
Corrugated iron is a practical fencing material that can provide privacy, durability, and a low-maintenance finish. It also offers a clean, modern appearance.
