Behind the Scenes of a Southland Fence & Site Transformation

If you’ve lived in Southland for more than five minutes, you know that outdoor structures here need to do a lot more than just look pretty on day one. Between the heavy rain, wind, stock pressure, and soft ground, whatever you build has to be built tough to handle Southland conditions.
Over my nearly 20 years of doing earthworks and landscaping across Invercargill and Otatara, I’ve seen plenty of timber fences lean or sag because the ground work underneath was rushed. I recently finished a great project on a rural property in the Invercargill region, where the owner wanted to separate their residential house area and rainwater tank from the surrounding farm paddocks.
Here is a step-by-step look at how we transformed raw, uneven dirt into a sharp, low-maintenance post-and-rail timber boundary and gravel yard.
Step 1: Site Prep, Levelling & Post Hole Boring
Every good fence starts below ground level. Before we could build anything, we needed to prepare the site properly.
Using our CASE CX26C mini excavator, I stripped back the rough topsoil, cleared away the overgrown grass around the house, and levelled the ground to create a solid working area. Good site preparation makes the whole project run smoother and helps ensure the finished fence stays straight and stable for years to come.
Once the area was ready, I used the post hole borer to drill each hole to a consistent depth. Around Southland, that's an important step. Soft ground and wet conditions mean shallow posts simply won't last. Every post was carefully lined up using a string line and checked as we went to make sure everything stayed straight from start to finish.
Step 2: Building the Timber Fence
With the posts securely in place, it was time to start building the fence.
For this project, we built a traditional four-rail timber fence that suited the rural property perfectly. It creates a clear boundary between the house, rainwater tank, and surrounding paddocks while still keeping the open country feel.
Each rail was measured, fitted, and secured carefully to maintain clean, straight lines across the property. Taking the extra time during this stage makes a huge difference to both the appearance and long-term strength of the fence.
Step 3: Installing Weed Matting
One thing many property owners get tired of is constantly dealing with weeds around fences, water tanks, and house foundations.
To make ongoing maintenance easier, we installed heavy-duty geotextile weed matting throughout the area behind the fence. Every section was neatly trimmed around the fence posts and tank pipework before being securely fixed in place.
It's one of those jobs you don't really notice once it's finished, but it saves a lot of time and effort over the years by helping keep weeds under control.
Step 4: Laying the Gravel
With the weed matting complete, we brought in clean AP20 gravel using our tipper truck.
Using the mini excavator, I carefully spread and levelled the gravel to create a tidy, free-draining surface around the rainwater tank and alongside the house.
Besides making the whole area look much cleaner, the gravel helps prevent muddy conditions during winter while improving drainage around the property. It's a simple addition that makes a big difference to both appearance and practicality.
Step 5: Installing the Gate & Finishing the Job
To complete the project, we built and installed a matching timber access gate to suit the new fence.
Heavy-duty galvanised hardware was used to provide smooth operation and long-term durability. Where needed, wire mesh was added along the lower sections to help keep pets safely inside the house yard while maintaining the boundary with the paddocks.
Once everything was complete, we cleaned the site, removed leftover materials, and made sure the property was left tidy and ready to enjoy.
