Starting with Site Preparation

Before any aggregate could be brought in, the existing ground needed to be cleared and prepared.

The first stage involved excavating the driveway area to remove unsuitable surface material and create a consistent subgrade. We used our compact excavator to remove soil and shape the area, working carefully between the existing lawn, fencing, and buildings.

Getting this stage right is important. If soft or uneven ground is left underneath the driveway, it can lead to movement, rutting, pooling water, and other problems later on.

Initial Site Preparation

Looking back towards the street entrance, the early stages of the project show the existing surface being cleared and excavated. The exposed ground was shaped to create a clean and consistent area for the new driveway base.

The compact excavator allowed us to remove material efficiently while working within the property's existing boundaries.

Preparing the Subgrade

Once the initial excavation was complete, we continued working along the length of the driveway towards the double garage.

The ground needed to be prepared evenly across the full access area. We worked along the lawn edge and checked levels as we progressed to make sure the subgrade was suitable for the next stage.

Good subgrade preparation gives the aggregate something stable to sit on. It also helps establish the correct levels and falls for the finished driveway.

For a driveway in Invercargill, this is particularly important. Southland's wet conditions can put a lot of pressure on poorly prepared ground, so drainage and stability need to be considered from the beginning.

Installing the Aggregate Basecourse

With the ground excavated and prepared, the next stage was bringing in the aggregate basecourse.

The excavated soil was replaced with a substantial layer of crushed stone and aggregate. This created the structural foundation of the driveway and provided a stable surface capable of supporting regular vehicle traffic.

The aggregate was spread across the long access area between the home and boundary fence, building up the driveway to the required levels.

This part of the job is more than simply spreading gravel around. The material needs to be distributed evenly and prepared correctly so the finished driveway has a strong and consistent foundation.

Levelling and Compacting the Driveway Base

Once the aggregate was in place, we moved on to fine grading and compaction.

The driveway base was carefully levelled from the street entrance through to the garage. We worked the aggregate to achieve a consistent surface while maintaining suitable levels for water runoff.

Compaction is another important part of the process. A properly compacted base reduces movement and helps prevent the driveway from developing soft spots, ruts, or uneven areas under vehicle traffic.

The final basecourse was left smooth, firm, and ready for the next stage of the driveway project.

Final Basecourse Preparation

The completed basecourse shows the difference proper groundwork can make. The surface extends neatly from the entrance through to the garage, with the aggregate fine-graded, levelled, and compacted across the full driveway area.

This provides a strong foundation for the driveway's final surface while helping manage water and everyday vehicle use.
